Docent training

This is a re-posting of a Facebook entry from February 24, 2016

Cumbres & Toltec - the early years
Cumbres & Toltec - Typical current consist

July 11th to 15th will be the date of Docent Training in Chama. We will arrive on the 9th and on Sunday the 10th we pick-up our season tickets and ride the westbound out of Antonito. The next day training starts for me with a written test to find out what I know. The days following are safety training and then two days of riding with a Docent. The final day is another written test to determine whether one knows the drill. If passed you then pay $25 and are issued a denim apron which all Docents wear. But, this is only the beginning as you are now a trainee for a full year. In 2017 I will again be tested and if all goes well I can then sew on a Docent patch.

Consists, the cars and arrangement, have varied over the years. The first picture is from the early years of the C&TS. You can tell this because the open car is a modified D&RG Gondola. It is also spotted directly behind the tender which would be a really dirty ride as ash from the locomotive can rapidly pile up while underway. The other picture is the current consist and you will notice the open car, which was purpose built, is located further down the consist.
